Richard Neale “Tuff” Hedeman is a four-time World Champion bull rider, Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer, and one of the most influential figures in the history of professional bull riding. Born in El Paso, Texas, Hedeman began competing at a young age and advanced through high school and collegiate rodeo before turning professional in 1983.
Over the course of his remarkable career, Hedeman qualified for 12 National Finals Rodeos and captured three PRCA Bull Riding World Championships (1986, 1989, and 1991). In 1993, he became the first bull rider to surpass $1 million in career earnings, a milestone that helped define a new era for the sport. He later added a fourth world title by winning the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Championship in 1995.
Hedeman played a pivotal role in shaping modern bull riding as a co-founder of the Professional Bull Riders organization, where he also served as president. His vision and leadership helped elevate bull riding into a standalone global sport and created new opportunities for future generations of athletes.
Widely recognized for his legendary matchups with the iconic bull Bodacious and for his lifelong friendship with fellow champion Lane Frost, Hedeman’s story became part of rodeo history and popular culture through the acclaimed film 8 Seconds. Beyond competition, he has continued to influence the sport through leadership roles with Championship Bull Riding and as founder of the Tuff Hedeman Bull Riding Tour, producing premier events and supporting the next generation of competitors.
Today, Hedeman lives near Stephenville in Morgan Mill, Texas, with his wife, Liz. He is the proud father of four sons—Lane, Trevor, Ryker, and Ripp—and grandfather to Rocker. Deeply rooted in the Western lifestyle, Tuff Hedeman remains one of bull riding’s most respected ambassadors and enduring icons, continuing to inspire fans and athletes through his passion, leadership, and lasting impact on the sport.
